We inspect all of the parts of your auto suspension to ensure everything is working properly. Following are the components and how they work.
The coil spring is the most common on cars. Coil springs compress and expand to absorb the motion of the wheels. Another type of spring is the leaf spring, several layers of metal bound together to act as a single unit. Leaf springs are commonly found on trucks and heavy duty vehicles.
A torsion bar uses the twisting properties of a steel bar to provide coil-spring-like performance. One end of the bar is connected to the vehicle frame. The other is connected to a wishbone. When a wheel hits a bump, the motion is transferred to the wishbone and then, through levering action, to the torsion bar. The torsion bar then twists along its axis to provide the spring force.
The shock absorber controls excess spring motion thru a process of dampening. The spring alone would continue to bounce without something designed to absorb the energy. This would make for a very bouncy ride.
The strut is another dampening structure. It is a shock absorber mounted inside a coil spring. Struts dampen like shock absorbers and provide structural support for the vehicle suspension.
Shocks and struts are considered crucial safety features because they have so much impact on how the car handles. If your shocks and struts are worn they allow excessive vehicle-weight transfer from side to side and front to back. This reduces the tire's ability to grip the road, as well as handling and braking performance.
Anti-sway bars (also known as anti-roll bars) are used in conjunction with your shock absorbers or struts to give you additional stability while going down the road. An anti-sway bar is a metal rod that spans the entire axle and effectively joins each side of the suspension together.
