One of the last things we think about during quarantine is the car. Out of sight out of mind? There are a few simple things that you can do to ensure your car is ready to roll when COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
Move Those Car Parts!
If you are truly not using it at all, we highly recommend that at a minimum you start it and let it run for about 20 minutes. Doing this will allow the battery to recharge and exercise and lubricate the moving engine parts.
Better yet, why just sit in the car? Take it for a little spin, a few miles down the road and back. Now we are exercising all the moving parts.
Cars that sit for long periods tend to develop rust on the rotors. If you’re like me and use your emergency brake while parked, that constant pressure of the pads to the rotors can cause damage over time.
Check the tires, are they inflated? Under-inflated tires can cause damage to the sidewalls and flat spots when parked for extended periods of time.
Running the car will also keep wildlife from nesting in the engine compartment. Squirrels, mice, cats and snakes are just a few of the likely squatters. They can cause severe damage to hoses and electrical components.
Keep Your Car Ready
Eventually, this will be over and we will once again take to the roads. While I have to say it’s been nice not having to rush from work to after school events and weekend sports, there is something good to be said about getting out of the house!Tags:
